Water Spider Spins Its Own "Scuba Tank"
Posted By at 4:59 PM

Water spiders survive below the surface thanks to a rudimentary "scuba tank" they spin from their own silk, a new study says.

Scientists at the University of Bern, Switzerland, determined that spiders use these scuba tanks, called air bells, as reservoirs, monitoring and replenishing oxygen levels to enable the animals to live underwater.

NASA prepares for moon mission--under water
Posted By at 8:06 AM

In life, you must crawl before you can walk; in space, you must swim before you can fly. That's why NASA has built its own version of SeaLab 2021 (which they call the Aquarius Underwater Laboratory) to train astronauts for future moon landings.

The close quarters and recycled atmosphere adequately simulate moonbase conditions, and with a little positive buoyancy, underwater outings are reasonably close to the one-sixth Earth gravity of the lunar surface. Using trained sharks to simulate radiation storms might be a bit of a stretch, though.
