Volunteers Needed for Research Studies at the Duke Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology
NASA Altitude Research Study
version 10/08/07 # 0076
Volunteers are needed for a study of the procedures astronauts use when preparing for Extravehicular Activity (EVA). These procedures are intended to minimize the likelihood of the bends (decompression sickness) when an astronaut is decompressed in their space suit.
Prior to the study, subjects must come to the laboratory (4 hours) for a physical exam, an exercise test, orientation, and scheduling for the experimental day, which takes place at least three days later. The experimental day requires approximately 11 hours, during which subjects participate in an oxygen “prebreathe” followed by exposure to space suit pressure in an altitude chamber simulation. Subjects are compensated $30 the initial visit and $120 for the chamber experiment.
Subjects must be male, 30-60 years of age, physically fit (exercise at least twice a week), and have no physical impairment that would prevent them from altitude exposure.
For more information, please contact Eric Schinazi at 919-684-5005 or Mike Natoli at 919-668-0017.
Flying After Diving Research Study
version 10/03/07 # 2918
Participants must be at least 18 years of age and certified divers or experienced in hyper/hypobaric chamber exposures. Each participant must complete a medical questionnaire prior to the study.
Compensation includes $120 plus one year of membership and preferred plan insurance from the Divers Alert Network if you are not currently covered ($100 value).
We are currently testing on Thursday evening (dive) and Friday morning (flight) approximately every other week with up to four subjects per test with dry and immersed exercise during the dive portion of the study.
Please contact the Research Department at 919-684-2948 x260 or toll-free 1-800-446-2671 x260 for more information.

Underwater Text-Messenger Makes SCUBA Diving Safer
Posted By at 11:36 AM
If there are any of you out there who are avid scuba divers, then we're sure you're well acquainted with the dangers and difficulties that go along with such a hobby. Most difficult of all when exploring what lies beneath the waves is maintaining a line of communication. So UTC (Underwater Technology Center) has developed the Underwater Digital Device or UDI.
